Heavy lifting

Moving a house by helicopter

Moving a house by helicopter is technically possible, and is done mainly for smaller modular dwellings and prefabricated structures.

Lifting power comes from rotor blade area, rotor speed and air density – and it is what decides what can be moved.

Helicopter lifting power

A helicopter’s lifting power depends on several things: the area of the rotor blades and the speed at which they turn, and external factors such as air density. Together these decide how heavy a load the aircraft can pick up.

Maximum lifting capacity

Every helicopter model has a maximum lifting capacity, and it varies widely. In our own case the Bell 205/UH-1H lifts a maximum of 1,750 kg, which makes it well suited to heavy work. The Airbus H125 lifts a maximum of 1,400 kg, with 1,200 kg as the practical load.

How weather affects lifting power

Wind, rain and temperature all change air density and therefore performance. Pilots have to assess the conditions continuously through a job and adapt to them.

Technical limits and pilot training

A helicopter’s technical limits – rotor blade design, engine power – define what kinds of load it can take. Pilots who fly this sort of lifting work train extensively in order to handle those loads safely and efficiently.

Can you actually move a house by helicopter?

Moving a house by helicopter is technically possible, and it is done mainly for smaller modular dwellings and prefabricated structures. It takes careful preparation and specialist equipment to handle and secure the load in flight, while keeping both the building and its surroundings safe.

What it costs to move a house by helicopter

Costs vary a great deal with the size and weight of the building and the distance it has to travel. This kind of operation is demanding in both equipment and people, which makes it an expensive service.

Which buildings suit a helicopter move

A helicopter suits buildings that are light and modular in design. Structures like these are often purpose-built to be relocatable, which makes the whole process simpler.

Permits and approvals

A move of this kind needs permission from both the aviation authority and the local authority. The project also has to pass a safety review confirming that every safety requirement has been met.

The risks of moving a house by helicopter

There are real risks: possible damage to the building in transit, and safety risks to both crew and onlookers. Thorough risk management and safety procedures are what keep those risks down.
