Helicopter Lift vs. Mobile Crane: Which Suits Your Project?

4 December 2024

When it comes to lifting on construction and installation projects, the choice between a helicopter lift and a mobile crane can decide how the job goes. At HeliAir we fly helicopter lifting, and we will help you work out when the helicopter is the better option.

Choosing between a helicopter lift and a mobile crane is a question of cost against efficiency – and of where the lift has to happen.

When is a helicopter lift the better choice?

A helicopter lift offers flexibility and speed a mobile crane often cannot match, particularly in a few specific cases:

Sites that are hard to reach

Helicopters are unbeatable for lifting material into areas with no road access – mountain tops, forest, or rooftops in built-up areas.

Projects on a tight schedule

Where time is the constraint, a helicopter lift can save hours, or even days, against assembling and operating a mobile crane.

Minimal impact on the ground

On projects where the ground will not carry heavy equipment – wetland, or sensitive natural environments – a helicopter lift is often the only option.

Where a mobile crane wins

Versatile as helicopter lifting is, a mobile crane has real advantages in some situations:

Greater lifting capacity

For very heavy lifts over short distances – placing concrete blocks or large structural components – a mobile crane is often the more cost-effective choice.

Long-running projects

Where lifting equipment needs to stay on site over a longer period, a crane is usually the better answer.

Cost efficiency – which option suits you?

The choice between a helicopter lift and a mobile crane usually comes down to balancing cost against efficiency.

A helicopter lift can look more expensive per hour, but its speed and flexibility often bring the total cost of the work down.

A mobile crane can be more cost-effective on projects with large, heavy lifts in one place.
